Technical University of Mombasa and NYS Softball Teams Bag Titles in Meru

The Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) and NYS Softball teams are the champions of this year's third series Softball league played at the Meru University of Technology grounds on 12-13th March 2022 in both the men's and women's categories respectively.

In the men’s category TUM, “The self made champions” – as they are nicknamed, narrowly beat Wreckers 6-4 in an epic final. TUM saw off reigning champions KU in the semi final in a 7-0 thrashing to set up an epic finale against the Wreckers who also thrashed Meru Softball team 14-1 in the other semi final.

On the first day of the tournament, the fight for a spot in the knock out stages saw JKUAT get bundled out after experiencing losses against both TUM and Wreckers. MMU also exited the tournament despite them beating NYS after succumbing to losses from both Meru and KU, while both DEKUT and NYS teams were eliminated after failing to get wins.

In the Women’s category NYS easily cruised past Wreckers in a 25-4 rout in the final. NYS experienced players hit dingers against their opponents to clinch the title.

In the semi final, NYS narrowly beat MMU 3-1 to clinch a spot in the final while Wreckers beat TUM 10-5.

During the first day of the ladies tournament, in which 7 teams participated in search of a place in the knock out stages, Meru lost against both TUM and JKUAT to exit the tournament , JKUAT also got bundled out after failing to win its remaining matches while KU despite tying with NYS at 6 points failed to progress due to NYS’ superior runs tally .

Simon Okeyo, the national team captain, who plays for the Wreckers men’s team and Hellen from the NYS women’s team were undoubtedly the best players of the tournament after showing some phenomenal pitches.

The next softball series will be held from 26-27 March 2022 at the University of Eldoret.
