RISING STAR: COACH CIKU`S JOURNEY FROM PLAYER TO COACH IN SOFTBALL AND BASEBALL5

Susan Mwangi, also known as Coach Ciku, is a highly accomplished coach with an impressive four years of experience guiding student-athletes to achieve their highest performance level in Softball and Baseball 5. Her coaching journey started in February 2014 when she joined Multimedia University softball team  as a first-year student and embarked on her softball career.

In 2015, Coach Ciku’s talent and dedication to the sport were recognized as she was selected as a catcher to represent Kenya in a friendly match against Uganda held in Kampala. Her skills and leadership on the field led her to be appointed the Multimedia University softball team captain, known as the “Stomers,” and she has since been actively involved in various national team activities.

Over the past four years of her coaching career, Coach Ciku has gained extensive experience helping players develop new skills and tactics to improve their form, performance, and endurance. Her expertise in fostering players’ competencies has earned her a reputation as a skilled and committed softball and Baseball 5 coach.

Coach Ciku’s achievements as a player and coach are remarkable. She recently played as a catcher for the Kenya Senior Women Softball national team during the African qualifiers held in Botswana in February 2023, where the team won the Bronze Award. Her coaching skills were also recognized on the international stage, as she was awarded the Golden Ball for being the best Baseball 5 coach in Africa after successfully qualifying for the World Cup.

As the head coach of the Kenya National Baseball 5 team, Coach Ciku led the team to a Bronze award in the African Baseball 5 Championship held in Dar-es-salaam, Tanzania, in May 2022 and qualified for the Baseball 5 World Cup to be held in Mexico in November 2022. She has also served as the coach for the Kenya Under-23 Softball Men National Team during the African Championship in February 2022 and as the assistant coach for the Kenya Softball Senior Men National Team during the same championship.

Coach Ciku’s passion for the sport is evident in her involvement as a player-coach for the Wreckers Softball ladies’ team, which she helped found and has been a part of since 2021. She has also been the team’s captain, showcasing her leadership skills and dedication to the game. Before that, Coach Ciku played for the Multimedia University softball team from 2014 to 2021, serving as the captain in 2016.

In addition to her extensive experience and achievements, Coach Ciku possesses various skills that contribute to her coaching effectiveness. Her coaching techniques are highly effective, and she is skilled in program operation, core coordinating techniques, softball and Baseball 5 analytics, and recruitment and retention strategies. Her professional enthusiasm and dedication to the sport make her a formidable force in the coaching arena.
