Derrick was introduced to the game of baseball in 2013 when he joined high school, and it was a Japanese coach called Toyota who introduced him. He gained experience by playing a lot of games against the Japanese team at that time, and he became the first rookie to hit his first home run in high school against them at Kenya Institute of the Deaf.

Derrick became the captain for the last two years of high school, and they achieved the first win as the Titans against the best senior team in Kenya, Nairobi Giants. In 2014, he played in the Kenya national team for the first time, competing against Uganda, Tanzania, and South Africa in Meru. He played in the national team again in 2017 in Tanzania, Mwanza, against Uganda and Tanzania, where they were the runners-up, second to Uganda. In 2018, Derrick played for Team Kenya at Lenana High School against Uganda and Tanzania again, qualifying for South Africa qualifiers.

He got introduced to the game of softball in 2017 at MMU, and he developed a passion for it. In 2018, Derrick attended WBSC coaching training in MMU and topped the class with a total of 96%, accumulating fieldwork and classwork. In 2018, he played his first softball series for the Multimedia Stormers at ANU and later got drafted to the NYS team. Derrick achieved many wins and topped series after series in his first year in softball, still playing for NYS. Playing for NYS, he recorded his personal home run best in the year 2021, with a total of 12 home runs in softball and 7 in baseball. In 2022, due to work commitments, Derrick missed all the games played, but at the beginning of the year, he qualified and played for his first time on the national softball team in Johannesburg, Pretoria, South Africa.

He missed the Baseball5 national team training and selection and most other activities that year. In 2023, Derrick played softball slow pitch for the first time for Team Kenya All Stars and recorded the first home run in a game for Team Kenya All Stars against the Japanese Samurai team. He’s looking forward to more series and games.

Derrick is currently playing for the Nairobi Softball and Baseball Wreckers Team as a shortstop and second baseman.
