Cheru, as he is fondly called among the softball fraternity, joined softball in JKUAT in September 2016 as a rookie at Right Field and played the first games at African Nazarene Series a month later. He later switched to Centre field in 2017 and that has been his primary position since then.
He represented JKUAT since joining the sport in National Softball League series notably East Africa University Games at JKUAT 2016 and Baseball for Africa tournaments winning the Softball league in the process. He was also part of the Baseball 5 tournament champions in NYS in 2019
Cheru has worn the national colours with the team to Africa World cup qualifiers held in South Africa in February 2022 where the team emerged position 3.
Cheru got trained to be a coach for Softball and Baseball 5 in 2019 therein becoming a level 2 WBSC coach. He then went on to help prepare the national ladies team for various tournaments notably the olympics qualifiers and a double header games between Kenya and Uganda teams held in Kenya and Uganda in 2020 in a team of assistant young coaches.
Coaching In his words ” Coaching involves the delicate and important responsibilities of selecting a team from a wide pool of good players, designing training and conditioning schedules, applying plays to reduce team weaknesses and errors, making batting lineups and managing team cohesion and chemistry. Although these responsibilities have been demanding, they have been key to making coaching a worthwhile and fun experience.”
Cheru switched to Nairobi Wreckers Softball club in 2022 where he currently plays as a Central or Left Fielder. He has long term plans to be active in the sport.
